What’s Causing My Low Back Pain Part 2: Pelvic Dysfunction

Prevalence of back pain

Millions of Americans suffer from back pain every day. It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 people will experience back pain in their lifetime. In most instances, these injuries can be relieved or fixed with physical therapy. When coming to Active Rx Rehab and Wellness Center for physical therapy, you will notice that our clinicians look at your structure and pelvic alignment to see if there are any pelvic obliquity or dysfunction that may be attributing to your back pain. With proper use of exercise, stretching, and manual therapy we can correct your alignment and improve your posture which will alleviate or fix your symptoms.

Stork Test (Gillet Test)

The Stork Test is one of the most used tests to determine Sacroiliac Joint dysfunction. SI joint dysfunction can be attributed to one of the SI joints being stuck resulting in improper movement. The test is performed by having the patient stand on one leg while bringing the other knee up to the patient’s chest. This is performed on both legs, one at a time, while the examiner/clinician is behind the patient examining any dysfunction or poor movement patterns. A positive test can be fixed within one session, however, sometimes requires muscle energy techniques or use of manual therapy techniques.

There are many other tests that can be used to provoke symptoms in order to determine if SI joint dysfunctions are present. Some of these tests may include sacral compression, thigh thrust, SI joint distraction, and sacral thrust. Nonetheless, there are many ways that your physical therapist can determine if there are potential SI joint related issues. All of these tests can be performed without requiring an MRI, although diagnostic imaging may be helpful in some cases.

Rehab options

Depending on the underlying issues that are causing your low back pain, there may be different therapeutic interventions available. Some of these interventions may be contraindicated, so it’s important to ask your physical therapist and doctor what options are best for you. Popular rehab options include therapeutic modalities for pain modulation, exercise, stretching, massage, joint mobilizations, manipulations, and a variety of other manual therapy techniques.
